Abstract

A sample of the hydrocarbon to be analysed id a continuously separated into a liquid phase and a vapour phase containing all the water vapour of the sample. The vapour phase is entrained by a controlled stream of carrier gas and the resultant mixture containing water vapour and carrier gas is continuously passed to a detecting system which measures its water content. The separation may be effected by flashing. The method is useful in refineries for indicating the presence of wter in crude oil.
