Abstract
The graphite moderated core has a neutron shield composed essentially of two superimposed layers of blocks made from neutron capture material. The blocks are so shaped and/or orientated that they leave a through passage for the coolant but are staggered in such a way that there is no direct, normal, line of sight from one side of the two neighbouring blocks of the two layers to the other. At least some of the blocks have through passages for the loading and unloading of fuel elements and these are offset from the centre of the blocks. The holes in the two layers can be lined up for fuelling operations when all the blocks in one layer are rotated through 180 degrees relative to those in the other.
