Abstract

1,236,808. Fuelling reactors; radiation absorbing materials. NUCLEAR POWER GROUP Ltd. 19 Nov., 1969 [29 Nov., 1968], No. 56819/68. Headings G6C and G6R. For refuelling purposes the lower part of a charge machine 1 is positioned on the floor 2 of a reactor or other facility to permit transfer of the fuel between openings 3, 4. Since the opposing surfaces of the machine and floor may not be entirely even, radiation may stream through the gaps and to prevent this occurring radiation attenuating members 5, which are compressible, are interposed between the machine and floor. Each member 5 comprises a layer 5a of compressible material, e.g. rubber, and a layer 5b of radiation shielding material, e.g. lead or steel. The thickness of the layer 5b is greater than that of the layer 5a when compressed and the members 5 of successive rows are inverted relatively to one another, as shown, to maintain the shielding effect across the whole width of the space between the machine 1 and the floor 2. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the members 5 comprise successive rows of rings disposed concentrically with the openings 3, 4.
