Abstract

Long fuel elements are locked into the grid of a nuclear reactor to resist the buoyant forces of the coolant (such as liquid sodium) by ball latches engaging with downward extensions from the fuel rod assemblies, released by pull rods extending upwards through the centre of the fuel rods to release rings at their heads. In case of breakage of a pull rod the latch piston can be deformed by force exceeding the normal buoyancy force.
