Abstract

Into a mould, which may be of complex shape, having high strength and good thermal conductivity, at least 60% (pref. 80%) of its volume of a polyol-i socyanate mixture, with catalyst and additives, e.g. glass fibre, pigments, fillers, and 25% w/w of blowing agent, is introduced; after allowing trapped air to escape, the mould is immediately closed, the reaction allowed to proceed so that the foam formed fills the mould completely, the pressure reached being 3.5-10.4 kg/cm2. Spacers/inserted tubes are not distorted. Then the mould and contents are heated to 65-80 C. for 30 min., removal of article from mould is aided by release agents. The foamed composition should have a density of at least 80% of that of the initial reactant mixture. Advantages are ability to make complex articles, avoidance of distortion of spacer inert and inexpensive and relatively low pressure equipment.
