Abstract
Moulding of expandable thermoplastic beads esp of polystyrene. N-. Treated with a blowing agent such as pentane, in a metal mould which is evacuated via orifices in plugs (I) situated in the wall of the mould. The (I) form part of the interior wall of the mould and have sufficiently low thermal conductivity to ensure that the beads in contact with them do not fuse together by way of heat transfer through the (I) before the beads in the centre of the mould have fused together. Inlet plugs of similar design are situated in the wall of the mould for the introduction of hot gas (e.g. hot air to esp. steam) at 1-1.4 kgf./cm2. In use, hot gas enters the mould through the inlet plugs, passes through the beads and leaves together with air, gas and condensate via the evacuation plugs. Pref. the inlet and outlet plugs are made of nylon-6,6. Products are moulded expanded polystyrene bodies with even density and excellent structural properties. Articles with sudden changes in profile can be made. Due to the low conductivity of the plugs, the orifices do not become blocked by fusion of the beads by heat transfer from the walls of the mould.
