Abstract

977,606. moulding polyurethane foam articles. STUBNITZ GREENE CORPORATION. Oct. 2, 1962 [Nov. 10, 1961], No. 37411/62. Heading B5A. Polyurethane foam mixture is poured into vented moulds which are heated externally, so that mixture adjacent to the mould wall receives the same heat treatment as is produced in mixture away from the wall by exothermic foaming reaction. Fig. 1 shows an endless conveyer system 12 on which moulds 10 are filled at station 28, have lids 26 (Fig. 4, not shown) fitted at station 32 and enter a gelling and curing chamber 36. Steam from nozzles 42 is directed on to the moulds (Fig. 3) raising their temperatures from 110‹ to about 210‹ F. Curing is completed in an oven 48, and moulds emerging therefrom, at 260‹ F., are opened, stripped at station 54, coated with release agent at station 58, and cooled to 110‹ F. in chamber 60. In addition to heating the moulds by condensing on their external surfaces, the steam in chamber 36 absorbs toxic gases, evolved by the foaming mixture, which leave the moulds by vents. Other condensable vapours than steam may be used. The moulds may be of aluminium, cast iron or steel, or magnesium. Car seats may be made by this process.
