Abstract
Polytetrafluoroethylene is moulded by first pressing particles of the material in a mould at a temperature of from 30 DEG C. to 190 DEG C. and preferably 60 DEG C. to 100 DEG C. and at a pressure of 50 to 10,000 pounds per square inch and preferably 3,000 to 7,000 pounds per square inch, removing the pressed material from the mould, sintering it at a temperature between 327 DEG C. and 500 DEG C. and preferably 360 DEG C. to 400 DEG C., e.g. 380 DEG C., and cooling the pressed body by immersion in cold water or by placing between cold metal plates. To compensate for shrinkage during sintering, extra material is placed in the mould. To allow air to escape, a pause is made during the build up of pressure. Details of the mechanical properties of moulded articles are described. According to the Provisional Specification inert fillers, e.g. finely divided metals, graphite, asbestos, and silica, may be added.
