Abstract

By means of the process of the present invention, metal surfaces can be refined with high levels of uniformity in relatively short periods of time. Use is made of a liquid substance to produce a conversion coating on the surface of the parts which are to be treated, the latter being agitated and at the same time continuously moistened by the substance in a mass finishing unit. The abrasive action causes the relatively soft coating to be detached from the raised points of the surface, the coating remaining practically intact, at the same time, over lower surface areas, the coating continuously being replaced over the exposed metal during the operation. Filling of the container of the finishing unit ensures effective agitation and continuous oxygenation of the liquid substance, thereby maintaining the desired reaction speed and a high level of surface uniformity.
