Abstract
A solar radiation sensor comprises a silicon chip behind a diffusion plate protected by a transparent dome. The radiation entering this assembly is a function of the cosine of the angle between the vertical and the direction of the sun. The sensor output passes through an optical coupler to an integrator where a control circuit acting on frequency dividers provide a signal equal to the radiation received per square metre. The integrator output drives a control circuit for a valve in the pipe leading to the field to be irrigated. The pipe is supplied with water at high pressure from a pump and a flowmeter measures the quantity of water flowing. The flowmeter provides a feedback signal for the integrator control circuit to turn off the water supply when the required quantity has been delivered.
