Abstract

An area measuring apparatus has a transparent support table (36) on which a hide can be spread and a lighting arrangement (16) for illuminating the table. Beneath the table is arranged a row of photo-cells (62) carried on a support (58) for traversing movement and extending transversely of said movement, and sensing means which may comprise an infra red detector (66), which signals each time a unit distance is so traversed. The output of each of those photo-cells shielded from the light by the hide is summed by computer control means each time a unit distance is traversed, the total summed representing the area of the hide.
