Abstract

PURPOSE:To find the presence of adhered mill scale and the length of a complete screw part in a non-contact manner, by a method wherein illumination light is projected directly to a top and a bottom of a screw, and the reflected light is caused to enter directly a photoelectric converter to obtain pulses generated at equal intervals corresponding to the pitch of the screw. CONSTITUTION:A pipe 1, wherein a screw part 1a is formed at one end thereof, is turned by a rotary device 2, and illumination light from a diffusion is reflected by the screw part 1a to enter a photoelectric device 7. A controller 9 instructs a signal input, generated from the photoelectric converter 7 and an end surface position detector 5, to a signal processor 10 each time a screw rotary angle, obtained by a rotary angle detector 3, attains a given sampling angle, and simultaneously, commands a signal process. Additionally, if a screw turns once, at least one item out of the presence of mill scale, a length of a complete screw thread a length of an incomplete screw thread, and the whole length of the screw is measured from processing and computing results in each sampling angle.
