Abstract
A platform structure particularly for off-shore drilling and associated operations comprises a barge 1 carried by piles 2 mounted on a caisson or caissons 3 embedded in the seabed. The platform structure is preferably of the type known as self-lifting or self-jacking type. Each caisson has vertical side walls 5 and is open at the bottom. One or more orifices 3' are provided in the top wall of each caisson and a duct 7 containing a valve 4 is connected to each orifice. The valves are preferably actuated from the barge 1 and control a flow of liquid out of the caisson during embedding of the caisson and the flow into the caisson during disengagement of the caisson from the seabed. The liquid, which may be water or a mud, may be pumped out of and into an enclosed space of variable volume which is defined within the caisson by a flexible impermeable diaphragm sealed with respect to walls of the caisson. The caisson may be internally compartmented by vertical walls and have an orifice 3' and, if desired, a diaphragm in each compartment.
