Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound, economically, in high yield, by reacting an alcohol with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance and a quaternary ammonium compound having (poly)oxyalkylene group in the molecule. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound having a wide range of industrial applications as intermediates of glycerol derivatives, etc., is prepared easily, in one step from the starting materials, in high yield and an industrial scale, by reacting an alcohol with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance such as an alkali metal hydroxide or a weak acid salt of an alkali metal and a catalytic amount (pref. 0.01-0.1mol, based on the alcohol) of a quaternary ammonium compound of formula I or II (R1-R3 are alkyl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl A is alkylene a is an integer of >=1) b and c are an integer of >=0, and b+c>=2 X is anion) at 0-100 deg.C.
