Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a glycidyl ether in one process in high yield by the reaction of an epihalohydrin and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol with an aqueous caustic alkaline solution in the presence of a specific quaternary basic salt.
CONSTITUTION: A glycidyl ether is obtained by the reaction of an epihalohydrin (preferably epichlorohydrin) and an aliphatic monohydric alcohol with a caustic alkali in the presence of a compound of the formula (R=alkyl, aryl; Y=N, P, As, Sb; X=monovalent anion) as a catalyst at 0W120°C, preferably 20W80°C. The amount of the catalyst is 1W0.001 mol per mol of the alcohol. The reaction mixture is preferably stirred and mixed thoroughly, since the reaction is carried out in the heterogeneous system.
