Abstract

Checking apparatus for checking correct operation of a voltage detector test instrument having a glow- discharge voltage detector element comprises a mechanically-operable piezo-electric voltage generator 101, 102, having output terminals 103, 111, between which is connected, as a shunt, a spark gap 116 acting as a voltage limiter whereby the output voltage at 138 applied to the voltage detector instrument can be limited to a precise value appropriate to the operating threshold voltage of the instrument. The spark gap 116 may be adjustable or spark gaps with different settings may be selectively brought into circuit by a switch to enable the voltage output to be varied. Instead of the spark gap 116, the shunt-connected voltage limiter may comprise at least one resistor whose resistance varies with voltage. The checking apparatus may be incorporated in the voltage detector instrument, or it may be an independent unit in its own separate housing, as shown.
