Abstract

In the foundry casting of a rail frog having lower recesses, a mould cavity for the metal frog is formed by two impressions formed in moulding sand in bottom and top moulds 24, 25, the impressions defining the external shape of the frog and the internal shape of the recesses therein. The impressions are both formed using a pattern 20 whose opposite faces reproduce simultaneously the external shape of the frog and the recesses in the frog. The pattern 20 may include detachable parts for defining recesses for fish-plates at the ends of the branches of the frog for connection to rails and detachable plates for defining base plates spanning the recesses for support of the frog on sleepers.
