Abstract
A sensor for responding to the rate of deceleration of a rotating vehicle wheel includes a flyweight 110 coupleable for rotation in response to wheel rotation and decoupleable in response to a rate of deceleration of the wheel which exceeds a certain threshold rate. A brake device 126 is operatively connected with the flyweight 110 for constantly exerting on the flyweight a torque resisting rotation of the flyweight. Provision is made for signalling of any occurrence of an excessive rate of deceleration of the wheel continuously for the interval of time during which a threshold rate is exceeded, and the brake device 126 may be operable in response to such signalling for changing the level of torque exerted. Coupling of flyweight 110 to input shaft 111 is via planetary gear 134 (or a claw clutch) incorporating a switch 142 to signal overun of flyweight 110 due to shaft 11 deceleration above the threshold value, torque limiting coupling 121, freewheel 124, and brake device 126 which may be electrical, electro- magnetic, or mechanical.
