Abstract

For producing character-bearing signs, a transfer material and a temporary intermediate backing film are used. The transfer material comprises a transparent or translucent backing film bearing on one side a plurality of transferable characters. The latter either themselves have sufficient adhesion to permit them to be transferred onto the intermediate backing film or have an adhesive layer on the surface side facing away from the backing film. However, with the aid of an adhesive layer on the temporary intermediate carrier film, the characters can also be transferred onto said temporary intermediate carrier film. The characters are transferred in the arrangement required for the desired sign inscription onto the intermediate carrier film, on which they adhere. Then, with the application of heat and pressure, they are applied onto a transparent sign film on which, with the removal of the intermediate carrier film, they remain adhering.
