Abstract

Panels with relief markings in contrasting colours are made by combining a support sheet of one colour iwth a contrasting sheet precoated with an ambient-curing adhesive covered with a protective film. The sheets are superimposed after removing the film and applying a thin fluid coating to the surface of the support (or the adhesive coating) to delay interfacial bonding. The superimposed sheets are embossed simultaneously in sufficiently sharp relief to share the upper sheet. Selected pieces of the upper sheet are removed to expose the lower sheet, the remaining pieces becoming bonded to the support following dissipation of the parting agent. Esp. used for making vehicle number plates etc. where different formats, and colour contrasts are required from place to place, year to year. Avoids use of heating, spraying masks, or matching of individually shaped components. Suitable and rapid for use by garages etc. Small regions register and retain their surface colours reliably.
