Abstract

1,268,036. Decorating or ornamenting surfaces; transfers. J. R. MORRISON. 22 Sept., 1970 [16 March, 1970], No. 44963/70. Headings B6C, B6G, B6P and B6X. A method of decorating a surface of an article comprises (a) the provision of a transfer sheet having a surface which accepts a wax-like or grease-like coating, (b) rubbing the transfer sheet surface with a marking appliance having the characteristics of a wax-base crayon, (c) placing the crayon-bearing surface against the surface to be decorated and (d) applying a rubbing pressure to the surfaces to transfer the crayon material from the transfer sheet to the surface to be decorated. As shown, a cardboard sheet 11, the surface 10 of which is to be decorated, has attached at one edge a guide sheet 12, preferably transparent, with a design 13 thereon divided into areas numbered 1 ... 6 according to a crayon colour. A blank transfer sheet 18 is rubbed with a crayon 14 having the colour corresponding to one of the numbers 1 ... 6, e.g. number 3, and the sheet 18 is placed between the sheets 11, 12 with the crayoned face against the surface 10. By now rubbing over the area 3 by means of a tool 25, the crayon is transferred from the transfer sheet 18 to the sheet 11 at the area 3. This procedure is repeated for the other areas to complete the design on the sheet 11. Some areas of the design may have a second number such as the number 7 in the area 3, and this indicates that a second colour is to be applied on the top of the first colour in that area. A transfer sheet may be supported on a hard smooth surface or on a resilient pad 19 whilst it is being rubbed with a crayon. Alternately it may rest on a patterned surface such as a surface 21 having a window screen texture or a surface 22 having a pebbled texture, so that the crayon is applied to the transfer sheet in a corresponding pattern which pattern also appears on the surface decorated. If the transfer sheet is supported on a piece of leather, the crayon is applied in the pattern of the leather grain. The transfer sheets, which are re-usable, may be of parchment paper with a grease-resistant coating. Transparent, translucent or opaque guide sheets may be employed, and the rear surface of a guide sheet may be decorated in the manner described. Designs comprising thin lines instead of coloured areas may be applied to surfaces.
