Abstract

Blast furnace slag is converted by (1) allowing water to drain from the slag during storage (2) homogenising the slag and (3) removing impurities such as broken firebricks, iron, iron oxide and grains rich in Fe(III)-Fe(II) silicates to give an end prod. with a constancy of analysis of plus-or-minus 1% of the main oxides, plus-or-minus 0.05% on magnetic iron (Fe2O3) and of plus-or-minus 0.02% on sulphide and sulphates of the alkaline earth metals. The capital and operating costs of the plant and process are low due to the elimination of the drying stage. There is no generation of smoke or fume and environmental contamination is reduced. The quality of the prod. is more uniform. The throughput of the glass melting process is increased.
