A method of preparing a composition for coating paper, paperboard and similar substrates, wherein an aqueous dispersion of one or more pigments is mixed with a copolymer latex, as an agglutinin for the pigment or pigments, produced by subjecting to emulsion polymerization a monomer mixture comprising, per 100 parts by weight total, from 35 to 65 parts by weight of copolymerized styrene units, from 30 to 60 parts by weight of copolymerized 1,3-butadiene units, from 2 to 25 parts by weight of copolymerized acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile units, from 0.25 to 10 parts by weight of copolymerized units of hydroxyalkyl monomer (as defined above), and from 0 to 5 parts by weight of copolymerized units of an unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymerizable.
