Abstract

A method for the preparation of an aqueous starch-based adhesive, having a Stein Hall viscosity at 35ºC of 20 to 100 seconds, which method comprises: a) preparing a carrier portion of molecularly dispersed gelatinized starch with a solids content of 3% to 40% by weight, cooking a suspension of starch using a jet cooker that operates at a temperature of 110ºC to 170ºC, with at least 1.1 times the amount of water vapor necessary to heat the suspension to the required temperature ; b) mixing the vehicle portion with a suspension of non-gelatinized starch, with a solids content of 10% to 40% by weight, in a relative proportion that provides a total solids content of 10% to 40% by weight, and a ratio by weight between gelatinized and non-gelatinized starch from 1: 2 to 1: 8; and c) providing alkali in the resulting mixture, in an amount of up to 5% by weight, based on the weight of the starch, such that the gelatinization temperature of the non-gelatinized starch is from 55ºC to 75ºC.
