Abstract

Improvements in an apparatus for continuously monitoring the concentration of sodium in a stream of mercury-sodium amalgam, of the type comprising a reference electrode, a solid electrolyte consisting of a beta-alumina wall interposed between said reference electrode and amalgam and voltage sensitive means with inputs electrically connected with said amalgam and said electrode, respectively, whereby the concentration of sodium metal in the amalgam is controlled as a unique function of the electromotive force generated jointly by the electrode and the amalgam, characterized by that the reference electrode is a reference amalgam of sodium metal and mercury of a known concentration of sodium, said reference amalgam forming an accumulation in a receptacle of impermeable and electrically insulating material, a portion of the wall thereof being formed, in contact with the reference amalgam, by said wall of beta-alumina.
