Abstract
A method of refining molten glass in a refining zone of a deposit containing molten glass, which method is characterized by supporting the molten glass on a thermally conductive support material that forms the base of the refining zone, heating the upper areas of the glass, fused in such a way that the temperature of the upper area is sufficient to effect refining, removing heat from the lower area of the fused glass through said support material that forms the base of the refining zone in order to minimize any undesirable interaction with the support material, causing the upper areas of the glass to slide forward through the refining zone from an entrance hole to said zone towards an exit hole of the same with a small return flow in the lower areas of the glass, control the depth of the glass in the area, its length and the temperature difference between the glass io at the inlet and outlet ports in such a way that the ratio of return flow to forward flow is between 1/6 and 1/2.
