Abstract
Procedure for leaching lead sulfide-bearing material and converting lead values to lead acetate, soluble with the simultaneous conversion of sulfur values associated with said lead sulfide to an elemental form, characterized in that it comprises the steps of: forming a dispersion of said finely divided lead sulfide carrier material in an aqueous medium to form a thick aqueous suspension; providing in said aqueous suspension thickens free acetate ions and adjusting the pH of the suspension to less than about 5.1; reacting said thick aqueous suspension at a temperature of the order of 602ºC to 120ºC. approximately with free oxygen carrier gas at a partial pressure of oxygen between approximately 1.40 and 4.21 Kg/cm2 and continue this reaction to oxidize the lead sulfide and convert it to soluble lead acetate with the simultaneous production of elemental sulfur insoluble.
