Abstract
A process for the production of bis- (benzyl) acetic acid derivatives of formula I, **(See formula)** where the symbols R1, which may be the same or different, mean hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, or straight chain alkoxy containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the symbols R2, which may be the same or different, mean methyl or ethyl, the symbols R3, which may be the same or different, signify methyl or ethyl, I (i) X signifies hydrogen and Y signifies -COOH, or (ii) X and Y are the same or different and each signifies a radical -COOR4, where R4 means alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and salt forms of the compounds where X is hydrogen and Y is -COOH, characterized in that a compound of formula Ib is produced, **(See formula)** wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 have the meanings indicated above, by reaction of a compound or compounds of formula III, where R1, R2 and R3 have the meanings indicated above, and X means chlorine or bromine, with a compound of formula IV, **(See formula)** where R4 has the meaning indicated above, and D stands for an alkali metal, in the presence of a strong base and in an inert organic solvent.
