1453643 Bis(p - acyl - benzyl) - acetic acids and -malonic acid esters SANDOZ Ltd 15 Feb 1974 [20 Feb 1973 3 Oct 1973] 6953/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises novel compounds of the Formula I in which R 1 is hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, or straight chain C 1-4 alkoxy, R 2 is methyl or ethyl, R 3 is methyl or ethyl wherein each R 1 , R 2 and/ or R 3 may be the same or different and either (i) X is hydrogen and Y is COOH or (ii) both X and Y are COOR 4 wherein each R 4 is C 1-4 alkyl provided that when the R 1 's are hydrogen and the R 2 's and R 3 's are methyl, both R 4 's are not ethyl, and salts of (i). The compounds (ii) may be prepared by reacting a compound of the Formula III wherein X is bromine or chlorine with a compound of the Formula IV wherein D is an alkali metal and the compounds (i) may be prepared by hydrolysis followed by decarboxylation of the compounds (1). α-Bromo-p-pivaloyltoluene may be prepared by forming a Grignard reagent from 4-bromotoluene and reacting it with pivaloyl chloride to yield p-pivaloyltoluene followed by free radical bromination. Pharmaceutical compositions of the compounds I when administered orally with the usual excipients show hypolipidemic and especially hypolipoproteinemic activity. [GB1453643A]
