Cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is H, halogen, CN, NO2, or NH2 R2 is H or halogen, R3 and R4 are H, 1-5C alkyl opt. substd. by OH or lower alkoxy, or phenyl opt. substd. by halogen, CF3, OH, lower alkyl, or alkoxy, or NR3R4 is opt. lower alkyl-substd. pyrrolidino, piperidino, morpholino or piperazino), claimed with their acceptable acid addn. salts if they contain a basic gp., have antiphlogistic activity. They may be prepd. by (a) reacting the corresp. 5-(4-biphenylyl)-2(3H)-furanone with HNR3R4 (b) reacting the corresp. acid halide or anhydride with HNR3R4 (c) reducing the corresp. 3-(4-biphenylyl)acrylamide (d) reacting a 4-biphenylylmagnesium halide with N-R3-succinimide (e) hydrolysing the corresp. nitrile (f) reducing (I R1=NO2) to (I R1 =NH2) or (g) Friedel-Crafts condensation of a biphenyl with Hal-CO-CH2CH2CONR3R4
