Abstract
Two stage method of removing the non-ferrous content from iron ores, roasted pyrites, dust and foundry by-prods. comprises (a) a sulphating roast to fully roast the sulphide content and produce water- or acid-soluble cpds., the speed of the reaction being suff. to ensure almost complete conversion (pref. is not >2% remains unconverted), followed by leaching and (b) after pretreatment of the leach remainder ie drying, milling and pelleting, the remainder is subjected to a chloridising vaporisation stage when the remaining non-ferrous content is quickly reduced to the required low value.
