Procedure for the preparation of new bis-stilbene compounds of the formula **(See formula)** in which R1 and R2 are the same or different and signify alkyl with 5 to 18 carbon atoms, substituted alkyl having a total of 2 to 20 carbon atoms or alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms; X1 and X2 are the same or different and signify hydrogen, alkoxy with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, halogen, alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; Y1 and Y2 are the same or different and signify hydrogen, halogen, alkenyl with 3 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; a represents hydrogen, halogen, alkoxy with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and the para positions are free of alkoxylic groups or respectively R1O- and R2O- groups, characterized by reacting around 1 molar equivalent of a compound of the formula **(See formula)** with approximately 1 molar equivalent of a compound of the formula **(See formula)** and about 1 molar equivalent of a compound of the formula **(See formula)** (In these formulas, X1, X2, Y1, Y2 and a have the same meaning as before; R'1 and R'2 have the meaning of R1 and respectively of R2, with the exception of alkyl groups containing modified carboxylic groups; and one of the symbols Z1 and Z2 means one group -CHO-, while the other means one of the groupings of the formulas **(See formula)** where R denotes an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical (with possible subsequent substitution), and by subsequently esterifying or amidating the carboxylic groups, in a known manner.
