Abstract

Improvements introduced in a process for concentrating a thermoplastic polymer of a solution thereof having no more than 50% by weight of said polymer, whose improvements comprise the steps of (a) rapidly preheating the solution at a temperature of 200 to 350ºC within a period not exceeding 60 minutes and under a pressure at least equal to the autogenous pressure, and (b) subsequently releasing said heated solution in a deflagration chamber maintained at less than 50 lpcm by removal of solvent vaporized therefrom, under from which a concentrated solution of at least 80% by weight of said polymer is obtained, (c) passing said concentrated polymer solution through a heating zone whose pressure at the outlet end is maintained at a lower absolute value at 30 mm hg and at a temperature of 200 to 290ºC and substantially vaporize the solvent of said solution; (d) passing the vapor-liquid mixture leaving said heating zone to a receiving zone maintained at a pressure of 1 to 4 mm hg absolute by removal of vaporized solvent therefrom; and (e) removing the polymer from said receiving zone in molten form essentially free of said solvent.
