Abstract

Bidirectional spacer device for a printing apparatus, provided with frame means, means defining a writing point, and a letter feeding or advancing part supported by movement in said frame means to effectively move the writing point along a writing line, said mechanism characterized by; an elongated retention member, normally mounted stationary on said frame means and essentially parallel to the writing line; an elongated positioning member, mounted with movement in said frame means, together and essentially parallel to said retention member and to the writing line, to move in its longitudinal direction; means for selectively coupling said letter advance part with said retention and positioning members, and including cyclically operable means for sequentially coupling said letter advance or feed part to said positioning member, and decoupling said letter advance part with respect to said retention member, and then coupling said letter advance part to said retention member and decoupling said letter advance part with respect to said positioning member; and means for selectively moving said positioning member in either forward or reverse or reverse or reverse increments along the writing line during times when said letter feeding or advancing portion is coupled to said positioning member.
