Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of 5-cyclohexyl-1-indanecarboxylic acids of the formula: **(See formula)** where Y is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, hydroxy, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, mercapto, cyano, nitro, amino or lower alkyl thio or a lower alkyl or tert-aminoalkyl ester or a non-toxic and pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; whose procedure includes the consecutive stages of: A) reacting a compound of formula: **(See formula)** with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in an inert organic solvent, to produce an intermediate keto acid of formula: **(See formula)** and B) reducing the keto group of said intermediate keto acid to produce a compound of formula: **(See formula)** and, if desired, introducing a substituent into the indane ring by known methods to produce a Y-substituted compound of formula: **(See formula)** where Y is the one defined above; and then, if desired, to resolve the compound obtained in the optically active racemates, and, if desired, to convert it to a lower alkyl or tert-aminoalkyl ester or a non-toxic and pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
