Abstract
and B7N. In a conveyer system in which a suspended load-carrying vehicle 22 mounted on pairs of wheels 18, 20 runs on a trackway defined by flanges 14, 16 of a beam 12 and is guided by rollers 24, 26 running in the space between the flanges, the vehicle is guided and propelled over a junction to a selected track by a linear motor arrangement. In the system shown the linear motor arrangement is the only form of drive and comprises field elements 30, 301 with polyphase windings 34, 341 on the vehicle and side plate armatures 32, 321 of magnetic material, with which plates 38, 381 of conductive material are associated, extending along the walls of the track support beam. Assume the vehicle has to be routed over the junction to branch track 48 the power supply picked up by brushes 42 from bus-bars 44 is interrupted to the windings 341 of element 301 thus the forward propulsion force F2 is reduced and an out of balance force F1 at right angles to the forward force urges the truck towards the armature 32 and guides it to the required track.
