In a transportation system, each vehicle is provided with a pair of follower members, one of which engages for vehicle guidance, a guide surface running parallel to the vehicle route and at junctions two such guide surfaces are provided one on each side of the vehicle path whereby in response to a guidance programme triggered by a track element in advance of the junction the right or left guide surface is engaged by an associated follower to route the vehicle to the right or left path. The vehicle 17 is supported by a fluid bearing 24 running on a steel plate and is provided with a two guide followers 38a, 38b, a selected one of which can be lowered into engagement via fluid cushion pads 36a, 37a or 36b, 37b with guide surface 35a or 35b. Normally the vehicle runs with follower 38a engaged with left-hand guide surface 35a but at junctions a right-hand guide surface 35b is provided and engaged by follower 38b if the right-hand branch is required. After passing the junction the followers are switched over so that the left-hand guide is again engaged. The vehicle is driven by a linear induction motor including a track mounted aluminium plate 40a or 40b which reacts with the magnetic field set up in vehicle-carried coils 42a or 42b. The left- or right-hand arrangement is used depending on which follower is engaged with its associated guide surface. At points where routes converge, Fig. 4, a vehicle on the left track is guided by the left guide surface and a vehicle on the right track is switched over to guidance by a right-hand guide surface in approach to the junction and then switched to the left guide surface after passing the junction. Sensing surfaces 15, 16 are provided on the front and sides of each vehicle so that assuming two vehicles 19, 20, Fig. 6, approach a converging junction the side of the leading vehicle 20 is engaged by the front of the second vehicle 19 and as a result of the engagement the leading vehicle is accelerated and the second vehicle is retarded to allow the leading vehicle to reach the junction first. The same system is used to retard a following vehicle if its front sensing surface engages a vehicle in advance. The track elements and associated vehicle apparatus which trigger the shift of the followers in dependance on the guidance programme may be an electromagnetic wave or sound transmission system or may be an electric contact engaging arrangement.
