Abstract
980,821. Electric railway systems. G. T. W. HUNT. May 8, 1961 [Feb. 10, 1960], No. 4771/60. Heading B7L. [Also in Division B8] A vehicle, e.g. a railway locomotive, a vehicle for launching a rocket or missile from a track, a conveyer belt or a shuttle for a loom, is propelled by means of a system comprising an inductor member consisting of a ferrous bar 13, having a pair of non-ferrous bus - bars 14 attached to its sides interconnected by non- ferrous transverse bars 15 embedded in the ferrous bar at spaced intervals, and a second inductor member 6 mounted on the vehicle so as to leave a narrow gap 16 between itself and the first conductor member, the second inductor member consisting of a single slotted bar 7 having a number of teeth 8 in the slots 9 between which is wound a three-phase winding 10 energized by a three-phase electric current which, in the locomotive shown, is supplied by a collector 2 in contact with overhead wires 3. The current supplied to the winding 10 sets up a travelling field along the length of the bar which induces magnetic fields in the track member, the interaction between the field causing a force parallel with the rails propelling the vehicle along. The current for an electric locomotive may alternatively be supplied by a diesel-generator
