Abstract
1356290 Railway systems SIEMENS AG 16 July 1971 [18 July 1970] 33624/71 Heading B7L [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] An electromagnetic suspension device for guiding motion of a body, such as a high speed vehicle, along a ferromagnetic rail 3 comprises an elongated D.C. electromagnet 2 secured to the body and magnetized transversely of its longitudinal axis, the electromagnet having laterally spaced pole faces of opposite polarity each of which has a length not less than fifty times its width. As shown, both the rail 3 and the core 4 of the electromagnet are U-shaped so as to form a circulatory path for flux produced by the coils 6 of the electromagnet. A sensor 8 located in the air gap between the rail and electromagnet controls the supply 11 to the coils 6 so as to maintain the air gap constant. The use of U-shaped members tends to prevent lateral displacement of the body relative to the rail. Fig. 2b shows another embodiment wherein the electromagnet is subdivided into a number of U-shaped cores such as 4a, 4b carrying windings 6a, 6b, one limb only of each core being shown. The ends of the windings are accommodated in slots in the ends of the cores, the upper sides of which are formed by slot wedges inserted after introduction of the windings so as to abut one another and avoid gaps in the pole faces 5. Auxiliary windings 15 are provided in the slots to reduce discontinuities in the magnetic field between the core sections.
