Abstract

1415743 Electric railway systems HITACHI Ltd 6 June 1973 [15 June 1972] 26991/73 Heading B7L [Also in Division H2] A high speed transport system comprises a vehicle 1 and a track, the vehicle incorporating a pair of facing D.C. energized superconducting coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP> arranged so that their magnetic fields extend laterally across the track, the track including a plurality of pairs of facing stabilizing coils 6a, 6b which are connected together so that their m.m.f.s. cancel, each stabilizing coil facing a respective D.C. energized coil on the vehicle when the vehicle is appropriately positioned on the track, the track also including inductive arrangements for exerting levitating and propulsive forces on the vehicle. The use of laterally spaced stabilizing coils lowers the lateral forces exerted between D.C. energized coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP> and so allows the vehicle to be built with a lower weight and mechanical strength than in the prior art. In the system shown, propulsive forces are produced by coil 7 in the track interacting with the coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP> on the vehicle. Coils 5, 51 on the track and D.C. energized superconducting coils 2, 2<SP>1</SP> on the vehicle provide the levitating forces. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the coils 2, 2<SP>1</SP> are omitted and the track is constructed to permit the coils 5, 5<SP>1</SP> to be inclined away from the horizontal towards the coils 4, 4<SP>1</SP>. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the coil 7 is placed above the stabilizing coils and a single levitating coil 5 is disposed in the position of the coil 7 shown, the coils 2, 2<SP>1</SP> again being omitted. In a modification of the Fig. 5 arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown) a single coil 11, placed in the position of the coil 7 shown, provides propulsive and levitating forces.
