Abstract

Novel nicotinyl [alpha] - (p - chlorophenoxy) isobutyrate and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof are prepared by reaction of [alpha]-(p-chlorophenoxy) isobutyric acid with thionyl chloride and reaction of the resulting [alpha] - (p - chlorophenoxy) isobutyryl chloride with nicotinyl alcohol in the presence of pyridine, followed optionally by salification of the product. Pharmaceutical compositions having antihypercholesteremic and vasodilatory activity comprise, as active ingredient, nicotinyl [alpha]-(p-chlorophenoxy) isobutyrate or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, together with a non-toxic carrier therefor, and may be administered orally.
