Abstract
Water sampling apparatus for taking from a flowing stream a sample of volume proportional to the volume flow of the stream comprises mechanism controlling a sampling device 1, the mechanism comprising (a) a drum 17 rotatable at constant speed having opaque and transparent areas A, B bounded by a curve representing the functional dependence of the rate of flow of the stream upon its depth, (b) a helically-threaded screw rotatable by a pulley 22 and a cable 23 inter-connecting a float 24 and counterweight 25 so as to displace a nut 26 parallel to the axis of the drum 17 in proportion to the depth of the stream and (c) a fixed light source inside the drum 17 and a photo-electric cell 16 carried by the nut 26 and in circuit with a relay to control actuation of the sampling device 1. The drum 17 is driven by a constant speed motor and the sampling device 1 may be a peristaltic pump comprising a motor for driving a transverse arm 3 supporting rollers 4, 5 cooperating with a flexible pipe 6 one end 7 of which is immersed in the liquid to be sampled, its other end discharging into a collecting flask 9. Two modes of operation are suggested: (a) in a single continuous revolution of the drum 17 the cell 16 scans the opaque area once to switch the pump on for a period depending on the longitudinal position of the cell which position is determined by the depth sensed by the float 24 so that the period is proportional to the volume flow and (b) in a predetermined number of reversals in the direction of rotation of the motor 18 (arranged to occur each time the relay 13 is energized) the opaque area is repeatedly scanned, controlling the pump to operate for a period proportional to the volume flow. Given the co-efficient of proportionality between the volume of a sample and the volume flow of the stream the total quantities of materials carried in suspension and in solution can be calculated after analyzing the samples.
