Abstract

A process for the preparation of furnace burden from iron bearing ore comprises introducing the ore, with a portion of sodium carbonate, into a kiln 13 to preheat the ore mixture, feeding the preheated ore mixture to a furnace 17 to melt the ore, and quenching a stream of molten ore to form granules, wherein waste gases from the furnace are introduced to the kiln to effect the preheating of the kiln. Sodium carbonate is preferably added in a portion of 5% wt. of the ore mixture. The ore is preheated to 800 to 1000 C. and melted at at least 1300 C. preferably 1400 C. in the furnace. After being discharged from the furnace, the ore strikes a plumbago wedge 37 where the stream is scattered into an inclined duct 32. Pellets solidify in the duct being cooled by a counter-current stream of air or water.
