Abstract

A refractory collar 11 on the top end of an open-ended mould 10 has a flange 12 depending into the mould cavity 13 gas (such as nitrogen) from passages 22 prevents molten metal entering a space 20 between the flange 12 and the mould wall. Preheating of the flange 12 by an embedded graphite electrical conductor 18 inhibits freezing of the melt within the collar so that scum collecting on the melt surface may be drained off periodically through a spout 17 at one end of the collar 11. Oil is introduced to the mould through passages 24. Melt entering the space 20 is detected by thermocouples 23 which cause the gas pressure to be raised to force it out. The refractory collar 11 has an angle-iron frame 14 with slotted lugs 16 which co-operate with bolts 15 pivoted to the mould top to secure or release the collar.
