Abstract

A fluidic control system for regulating the tension in a moving web 12 comprises a tension detector 32 constituted by a nozzle 34 associated with a fluid supply 33 and a flapper gate 31 controlled by a roller 28 spring-biased against the web 12 an arrangement of fluidic devices responsive to the output from the detector 32 and producing a control signal on line 77 representative of variations in the tension from a desired value a piston 24 in a cylinder 25 connected to the line 77 and tension control rollers 13, 14 associated with a brake disc 19 and a brake 21 operated by the piston 24 which is so operated, by the signal in line 77, that the web tension is maintained at the desired value. The arrangement of fluidic devices includes one proportional amplifier 37 connected between the output from the detector 32 and an indicator 42 for the web-tension, and further proportional amplifiers 46, 53, 92, 93, 94 which are associated with a fluid oscillator 78, fluidic bi-stable devices 54, 64 and fluidic AND gates 59, 60 interconnected, as shown, to provide a pulse output on device 64, this pulse output being width-modulated in accordance with the amount of error existing between the sensed tension and the desired value, this pulse output being applied to control valves 70, 71 the output from which forms the control signal in line 77.
