Abstract
Continuous filament tow is converted into a sliver having uniform staple length fibres by (a) feeding at least two webs 10, 12 of tow from a supply source 8, (b) cutting the filaments into staple length fibres by cutter rollers 24, 26 (c) superimposing he webs to form a single web, (4) condensing the width of the webs at station A, and (5) feeding the webs to a gill station B. The gill station has faller bars which engage the web at a distance from the nip of the back draft means (which forwards the webs) at a distance shorter than the length of the cut staple fibres, the bars moving away from the nip at a speed faster than the linear speed of the web through the nip. The gill station also has a front draft means which forward the web at a speed faster than the speed of the web through the gill station. The sliver may then pass through a second condensing station F, and then through a second gill station G before passing around wedgeshaped rollers J, which serve to further condense the sliver, and thence into coiler K. A web of staple fibres W, e.g. wool fibres, may be blended into the sliver upstream of the back drafting rollers 46, 40, 41 of the first fill station. Waste is withdrawn from the web by suction heads attached to vacuum source V at the gilling stations. Each pair of cutter rollers 24, 26 may comprise a roller having a helical cutter element thereon which forms a nip with an anvil roller. One helical cutter roller is righthanded while the other helical cutter roller is left-handed so that when superimposed the single web has the diamond-shaped cutting pattern in plan elevation. The front pressure draft roller 72 of the second gill station has a concave surface so that an equal amount of pressure is distributed across the width of the web. Specification 1,246,334 is referred to.
