Abstract

The flow of material from the outlet of a mixing and kneading chamber 1 having a wormshaft 14 mounted therein is controlled by a spigot 8 which is arranged to be axially displaced and rotated simultaneously when the pressure of material in chamber 1 acting on it exceeds a predetermined pressure value. The outlet of the chamber is provided with a nozzle 2 having a converging-diverging opening as shown. The internal surface of the diverging portion of the nozzle opening is provided with guide elements 9, see also Figs. 2, 3 (not reproduced), which divided the material into a number of stands. As the material is extruded through the nozzle, it may be cut into pellet-form by rotating cutter blades 711. The nozzle and spigot may be provided with heating and cooling means.
