Abstract

A metal, e.g. steel or aluminium, foil 3 for use as a planographic printing plate is cleaned and roughened by a plasma jet 5. The jet may contain oxygen or kieselguhr to form an oxide or silicate surface, and the surface may be coated with copper, titanium or silicon carbide by introducing powdered material into the jet. The foil may be supported by coolant, which may be conductive, in a container 6. The jet may be moved transversely of the foil.
