Abstract

The canning of a fuel element is removed by heating the element in an inert atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to melt the canning but below the melting point of the fuel. As shown in Fig. 1 fuel elements having magnesium canning are suspended in a steel basket 4 in a sleeve 2 disposed in a sealed chamber 1 filled with argon. The furnace 6 is heated to 750 C. so that the magnesium melts and drops into a crucible 5 where it solidifies. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a sealed chamber 1 contains a mass 12 of magnesium which is melted by a heating element 13, the basket 4 containing the fuel elements then being lowered by a support 11 into the molten mass to melt the canning. Heating element 14 is now switched on to melt the magnesium in the pipe 8 so that it may flow into discharge vessel 7.
