Abstract

Rose oxide, 2-(21-methyl-11-propenyl)-4-methyltetrahydropyran, is prepared by the pyrolysis of 3 - chloro - 2,6 - dimethyloct - 1 - en - 8 - ol which may be prepared by chlorination of citronellol with chlorine. The product may be purified to yield a mixture of isomers in the ratio cis: trans = 2: 1 or to yield the pure cis isomer. Specification 1,079,421 is referred to.
